Going vegan at Panache

As you guys know by now, I love to discover new places. Especially those that cater to a vegan diet. So I got invited to try out Panache, an eatery that specialises in Indian cuisine, based in Sutton Coldfield. They have a vegan menu and it's the perfect location for a fancy meal. But how did the vegan options fare?


It truly is a beautiful restaurant. Sleek, contemporary and classic.

They even have a dining area that would be perfect for a large family

Of course we started the meal with poppadoms. They did not disappoint. Crispy, warm and in a plentiful moment.

Of course the poppadoms were accompanied by an array of chutneys. Pickles, mango chutney, onion salad and a chilli sauce. The pickles and mango sauce, shown in the image above, were our favourite. Spicy, sweet and just lovely

For my starter, I went for the Aloo Puri. This is a potato curry in a deep fried roti, served with salad on the side. I loved the idea of this, the portion was large for a starter. So much so I could've easily just had this. You know me though, I wouldn't quit just there. The aloo filling was lovely too. However, the filling was a tad too oily for me, a little bland and the puri was a little too flat. It would've be a lot better if the puri was on the side of the curry. No soggy bottom. But I still enjoyed it.

So on to the mains. We started with the Bhindi Bhaji. This was one of our favourites. It's a okra curry that is made bengali style, which was amazing. There was none left, that's how good it was!

Next was the Vegan Roshuni Squash Bhagar, this was steamed butternut squash cooked in a shallow fried flakes of garlic and bay leaves in a bhuna style semi-dry sauce made from diced onions and green pepper. Then seasoned with tomatoes, cucumbers, coriander and spring onions. This was tasty and such an innovative idea and it tasted really good all together. But again, I found it to be a little bland and greasy.

The Vegan Jalfa is great as a mixed grill kind of alternative, as it's served in a tawa. This contained potatoes and spinach in a base sauce of pan fried red peppers, green peppers, spring onions and mushrooms. Loved this, as it was full of flavour and the veggies were used in a very innovative way. The tawa also gave it a nice smoky taste too.

The dishes were accompanied by Pilau Rice, Vegan Sizzling Rice and Roti. The roti was flawless and the rice dishes were quite nice too; all of which worked well with the dishes.

After all that I was really full but I had to try out the dessert. I had the Vegan Lemon Cheesecake, which tasted a lot like the Asda one, but it was tasty and presented beautifully.

I visited Panache with my mum and she had the meat dishes. The best she tried was the lamb shank dish and her dessert looked immense. She felt the same way that the dishes were a tad too oily for us and a little bland.

Would I go back? Maybe not, as a long way to travel but I would consider it if I was in the area

How did they cope with the vegan dietary requirement? Very well, as they have a vegan menu

What are the prices like? All of the vegan options altogether would have been around £40

What is eatery best for? A celebratory fancy meal
